Gershowitz Transportation

The beginnings of Gershowitz Bus Co. began in the mid 1930's. Naaman Gershowitz and his father Meyer, started running "hack cars" -- bringing clients back and forth to the Catskills from New York City. They had a small dairy farm in Hurleyville and the transportation services they provided supplemented their income.

This led to more car service, with the school in Liberty hiring them to transport students to school with their cars, one being a 1936 Buick Roadster. In 1936 they purchased their first "School Bus" which looked like a Wonder Bread Truck. Naaman Gershowitz actually drove this to and from school in his own senior year.

By 1955, the farm operation had moved to Aden Road in Liberty and the transportation business had 3 school busses for the Liberty School District.

In 1966 the Liberty School District voted in 1/2 mile transportation and we expanded to 16 bus routes that year, and the dairy in Liberty closed so that farmers needed to buy very expensive bulk tanks to store their milk. So in 1967 the stock was sold and the Gershowitz family focused strictly on transportation. They expanded to 17 busses, but unfortunately the district changed their policies, leaving us with 7 routes. We sold off a few busses, leased some to Monticello as they waited for orders that didn't' come through and somehow survived it, supplemented hugely by the charter work we were able to do with the extra equipment.

This stayed status quo until 1978, when George Gershowitz returned from Graduate school to help out his father. His brother Martin was also involved in the business. In 1971, the enterprise formally incorporated as Naaman Gershowitz Inc. Then, in 1978 George Gershowitz purchased the contracts and equipment from Fred Ahrens (Tri Valley School) and established George Gershowitz Inc., operating from the Neversink facility. There were about 19 bus routes, 21 busses and 5 vans.

In 1990, George Gershowitz purchased Naaman Gershowitz Inc. and combined it as Gershowitz Bus Co. In 1992 we added the ARC work which at that time was about 20 routes.

In 1994 we were awarded the remainder of the Liberty contract when they privatized and added about 17 additional routes.

In October of 2001 the business was purchased by the Trans Group.

The Trans Group, a large regional school bus operator, ran the company until August of 2006 at which time it was purchased by Rolling V Bus Corp. Rolling V brings a more hands-on management approach, increasing the level of support to managers, drivers and maintenance departments.

Gershowitz Transportation currently provides daily service to the Liberty Central School District, Tri-Valley Central School District and Sullivan ARC.
